The Historic Mosaic Trail is the beloved centerpiece of the original Science Center Garden. The Trail features hand-blown and hand-painted tilework celebrating the lives and places that make up the American experience.
The Historic Mosaic Trail was designed by artist Attilio “Pug” Puglisi, who also worked for both Cypress Gardens and Sea World. He originally designed the installation for the National Bank of St. Petersburg on Tyrone Boulevard. The Bank’s President, Stanley M. White, gifted the installation to the new Science Center in 1970.
The Historic Mosaic Trail honors each of the 50 states with its official bird and flower. Tile portraits of historical figures are interspersed throughout. The state mosaics form the heart of the winding walking trail through the old-growth trees and local Florida flora.
The plants in the Garden have been selected carefully in partnership with local experts to reflect the botanical heritage and biodiversity of Pinellas County. Above, the waterfall from the Star Garden atop the Science Center joins the two spaces and contributes to the serene beauty of the trail. The waterfall will be replenished by stormwater to reduce dependence on outside sources of water for landscaping.
The Historic Mosaic Trail provides a rare historical and garden attraction in West St Pete what will delights locals and tourists alike.
